Summertime Blues

Mid-June, 2024. Not quite summer, but it’s close. For the last couple of months, I’ve been playing some music at WUSC. Regular show hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10am to noon. I sometimes stay late to keep playing. I also slip into the station for renegade shows whenever I can, but the last couple of off-hour shows have been Saturday after the ten pm ending of the goth hour.

Last night I played until 3am, a lot of the same stuff, added some surf music that I picked up, played a little bit from the musical ‘Hair’ and just generally had a good time. I dance and sing and clap along to the music, and when I leave, I’m worn out and ready to go. It’s not easy playing music for five hours. Well… it’s easy, and fun, but it’s a little difficult coming up with the flow. Imagine picking and playing five hours of your own music two or three times a week. We can’t play the same artist in the same hour and we can’t play any top 40 artists from the last 60 years. There are a few other rules, but I try to stick to those for the benefit of our station and the audience.

I generally start the same (as in ‘the same song’), and I play a lot of the same music from show to show, but in a different order each time. There is a flow, I take requests and I do the best to play to the audience. I’m hoping to build a bit of familiarity with our core listeners. All of the music comes from my personal collection, which continues to expand. To help with new music and expanding selection, I visit Papa Jazz a few times a month to peruse the new music they get. I’ve NEVER left empty handed, and the music is super affordable.

On the home page of this website you can click the links for social stuff, and I’ll try to keep that up to date also.

There’s a lot more to say, but it’s beautiful outside and I want to enjoy it while it’s here…

Have a good summer, and tune in when you can.
